The event was attended by all faculty members in the English department led by the head of the department Dr. Hmoud Alrwais.
Dr. Khalid Bahaa, an assistant professor at the department, tackled the topic of “Linguistic landscape,” addressing the use of signs in public places, roads and for advertisement purposes. The speaker also explored the fact that signs reflect the values of the language/s they are written in. Therefore he calls for the inclusion of signs in language materials taught to students.
The second speaker, Mr. Nabeel Abu-Sineina, a lecturer at the department, shed light on the pronunciation difficulties encountered by Arab learners of English. He counted several factors causing the difficulties: the complex nature of the relationship between letters and their sounds in English language. For example, one letter may have different pronunciations in different word contexts and one sound might be represented by different letters. Such differences are not found in Arabic where there is a one-to-one relation between letters and their sounds.
