About the Unit

Academic counseling is a major pillar in the success of the strategic plans for education in general and in implementing activities in the educational institutions in particular. It is a type of guidance, and is generally subsumed under Applied Psychology.

Vision

Provide quality counseling services to students at all study levels, contribute to the development of their personalities academically and intellectually, and develop their skills in various areas in accordance with international quality standards.

Mission

Provide academic counseling services by helping students understand the academic system at the university and remove the reasons that cause failure.

Objectives

The Counseling Unit aims to provide students with guidance and rights in order to translate the College’s aspirations to help students to understand their academic problems and ensure proper treatment of such problems in a way that can bring about graduation of generations of students equipped with the necessary knowledge, faith, skills, self-confidence and ability to participate in national development. This goal can be achieved through the following objectives:

  1. Create conditions necessary for the proper growth of students, building positive social relations with students, colleagues, faculty members and university employees, and nurturing effective responses to academic problems in different situations throughout the period of university study.

  2. Prepare new students to explore university life through orientation programs, and introduce them to the College, deanship and other departments, instructing them on how to obtain relevant student services in cooperation and coordination with the specialized administrative staff.

  3. Inform students about academic difficulties, study skills, time management, and other relevant tools that increase their academic achievement and enhance their personal progress.

  4. Help students choose the right topics that comply with their potential and interests and reflect the labor market needs and requirements.

  5. Encourage outstanding students to gain more, and direct them to invest their abilities and potential in areas commensurate with their interests and future career.

  6. Follow up lagging students and push them on to study harder and acquire the necessary skills to boost their educational achievement.

  7. Help students with special needs during their university life to realize the highest levels of psychological and social adjustment and academic achievement in accordance with their abilities, while investigating and solving their likely problems.

  8. Assist international students by providing a range of activities appropriate to them, deepening the notion of their belonging to the Islamic Nation, and highlighting the Kingdom’s role in serving Muslim issues.

  9. Promote awareness of academic regulations among students.

Responsibilities

  1. Prepare student files

The academic guide prepares a special file for each student under his/her guidance assignment. The file includes the following:

  • Student data form

  • List of core courses of study required for student’s graduation

  • Registration form, if possible

  • A recent copy of student's academic status

  • Other relevant administrative documents, etc.

  1. Provide general student guidance

  • Inform students of the academic guide’s role and academic and educational responsibilities towards them.

  • Provide orientation to students to understand their academic situation and plan well for their future.

  • Ensure that students know where and when lectures start and that there is no discrepancy in student schedule, course deletion, course addition, course cancellation, and the transfer system from one department to another.

  • Monitor students’ absence or dereliction of curricular functions, and follow up cases referred to him/her by the Counseling Unit in accordance with the approved plans.

  • Coordinate with professors of subjects to overcome problems faced by students in the courses.

  • Encourage students to engage in academic activities to improve their level of learning and activate self-learning procedures.

  1. Discover and support defaulting students

  • The guide reviews the results of quizzes, mi-term and final exams to identify defaulting students (who have scored less than 60%).

  • The guide conduct interviews with each of these students to identify the problems from the student’s point of view, and write a report. After finding out the reasons for their failure, the matter is presented to the Counseling Unit for support and follow-up to solve the problem until the student’s achievement level rises.

  • In student’s file, the guide records the nature of student’s problem and achievement level.

  • The Counseling Unit follows up defaulting students in each department.

  1. Support for outstanding students

  • The guide, in cooperation with the Counseling Unit and College Administration, designs and implements a program to support outstanding students. The program aims to:

  • Improve students’ abilities culturally and skillfully, and develop their talents.

  • Help students recognize their abilities and satisfy their own preferences.

  • Provide programs and activities that meet the creative needs of students.

  • Create a spirit of honest competition among students.

  • Celebrate continuously in media creative students.

  • Direct students to read some articles and research related to creativity and excellence.

  • Encourage students to communicate with some creative personalities to use their expertise.

  • Give students an opportunity to express their opinions and creative suggestions freely.

  • Encourage students to engage in community service and environmental promotion activities.
