Research and development are considered as a vital component to allow Saudi Arabia achieves its long-term goals. One of the Kingdom's goals, as stated in Vision 2030, is to be among the top 10 countries in the global competitiveness index, which is ranked in 2030, improving its 25th rank in 2015. There are two main points of the global competitiveness index that are directly related to research and development, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can improve them only by increasing its competitiveness in research and development. In addition, another goal stated in Vision 2030 is to have at least 5 Saudi universities among the top 200 universities in the rankings. Achieving this goal requires conducting high-quality research in the universities of the Kingdom.
