Introduction
The safe implementation of experiments requires work practices that reduce risks and ensure the health and safety of laboratory workers. There are important basic principles before working in the laboratory, summarized as follows:
- Experiment planning. Identify potential risks associated with the experiment before starting and develop a plan to deal with waste generated in the laboratory before starting any work.
- Limit exposure to chemicals or unknown substances. Do not allow laboratory chemicals to come into contact with the body. Use laboratory hoods and other ventilation devices to prevent exposure to airborne materials whenever possible.
- Don't underestimate the risks. Assume that any mixture of chemicals will be more toxic than its constituents and consider all new compounds and substances of unknown toxicity as toxic.
- Be Prepared for Incidents Before the experiment begins, find out the specific action to be taken in the event of an accident involving any hazardous substance. You must know the location of all safety equipment and the nearest telephone and fire alarm, and know the phone numbers to call and who to inform in the event of an emergency.
- Be prepared to provide basic treatment in an emergency. Keep your co-workers informed of your activities so that they can respond appropriately.
